Hi everyone!
My name is Jackie and I work with an awesome team in Central America running surf and yoga retreats for women. Our company, Surf With Amigas, works very closely with a non-profit organization called Waves of Hope. Waves of Hope is located in northern Nicaragua and has done countless amazing things to aid positive development in this rural and impoverished community.
One of these awesome efforts is their Sea Turtle Conservation project. Over the years, sea turtles have become endangered all over the world and throughout the beaches of Central America. Waves of Hope's project allows for the locals that once ate and sold these turtle eggs to support their families to have the option of participating in the conservation project. The locals we deem "poachers turned conservationists" responsibly collect the eggs in the night and bring them to the protected hatchery on the beach. Waves of Hope buys the eggs at market value, thus providing responsible and earth-minded employment for the local people. After the incubation period, the baby turtles hatch andd are eventually released into the ocean.
Each year, the numbers of successfuly hatched baby turtles goes up, and we are raising money to keep this trend going. This year's budget for the project is $2000 to include the maintenance costs of the hatchery and purchase costs of the turtle eggs. All the money we raise goes directly to Waves of Hope.
