The 100 Village Project team hasn't added a story.
I’m Kelvin, the cofounder of the 100 Village Project, which aims to empower the Rohingya refugees in Malaysia in establishing self-sufficiency.
The Rohingya are often said to be the world’s most persecuted minority. They are an ethnic Muslim group in majority Buddhist Myanmar and make up around 1 million of the total 50 million population. They hail from the country’s northwest and speak a Bengali dialect. Almost all live in Rakhine, one of the poorest states in Myanmar, with a population of 3 million. The Rohingya are not regarded as one of the country’s 135 official ethnic groups and are denied citizenship under Myanmar’s 1982 Citizenship Law, which effectively renders them stateless. Being stateless means a severe lack of access to fundamental rights such as education, healthcare, career, and legal safeguards. In Malaysia today, there are an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 Rohingya refugees in asylum.
With many Rohingya refugees unemployed or not being able to secure a job due to their stateless situation, the level of economic participation among them diminishes. Along with conventional charity approaches that repeatedly place the refugees on the receiving end of the society, the cumulative effect is a widescale community deactivation.
The 100 Village Project aims to tackle this. We strive to revitalize the refugee community’s potential through restoring community activities and through these, resilience. Our project involves three underlying key components. The first is the construction of an Earthship-inspired sustainable village house that is made of recyclable materials such as tires, glass bottles, tin cans, earth, clay, bamboo, recycled timber, and so on. It features sustainable solutions including solar power generation, waste management, rainwater harvesting, temperature regulation, among others. The Earthship concept is not new, and to achieve this, we partner with Build for Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization that had already succeeded in completing the first Earthship vernacular structure in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia with the indigenous people. The second component regards food and medicinal plant production based on permaculture principles. Lastly, the third component is really on creating a collaborative and inclusive community dynamic.
We are prototyping this project in Langkawi Island, Malaysia. The reason to do this in Langkawi is to tap into its touristic environment. We bring together not only the locals, but also international tourists from all around the world, thus manpower as well as channeling different expertise such as permaculture and sustainable building technologies.
With the US$5,000 raised, our expenditure plan goes as follows: US$500 on 2-month internal operation cost (logistics, administration, etc.), US$200 on the construction of an on-site volunteer camp and dormitory, US$1,300 on building materials and equipment, US$750 on a secondhand transporter (van), US$1,200 on refugees' 2-month basic wages (2 refugee workers, 5 days a week), US$450 on permaculture farming materials and equipment, and US$600 on 2-month volunteer expenses (primarily food).
It is hoped that with the success of this pilot project, the 100 Village Project is able to create a movement in Malaysia and neighboring countries that provide asylum to these refugees, where sustainable living solutions become more widespread. As we maintain an open-source concept, we envision an international community that adopts the concept and better its design and improve its implementation methods in the near future. More importantly, by upholding the inclusivity of our project’s approach, refugees will be empowered to take leadership initiatives to influence other refugee communities to take part in this sustainable, long-term solution.
Every penny and dollar helps.
