Mother Tongue by Annalouise Paul
World premiere September 3 – 5, 2014.
At Bangarra Dance Theatre, Wharf 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay.
So here's our story…
Our campaign is to raise funds to pay 6 incredible dancers and 1 musician for their performances of a new intercultural dance-theatre work ‘Mother Tongue’ by Annalouise Paul in its Australian premiere season.
The artists you will be supporting through this campaign are dancers Aletta, Andrea Adidi, Geraldine Balcazar, Patrick ‘Lucky’ Lartey, Gregory Lorenzutti, Govind Pilal, and musician, Tim Foley.
By contributing, you automatically become a vital member of our team keeping the performers fed and healthy during this important week as the work reaches full flight of its world premiere at Bangarra’s home on Sydney Harbour!
Here’s the show synopsis and a little clip of us at work –
Mother Tongue is a kaleidoscope of woven dancescapes, rhythms and vocals from the Torres Strait Islands, India, Ghana, Polynesia, Indonesia and flamenco with contemporary body percussion and multimedia design inspired by sacred geometries and underpinned by a profound statement on war, cultural tolerance and healing.
The third and final work in Annalouise’s trilogy ‘Conversations in Rhythm + Dance’, it is an innovative interplay between contemporary and traditional musical systems, cultural dances and interactive media. It celebrates and illuminates the uniqueness and differences of human beings - their cultures, art forms and ‘mother tongues’.

What We Need
- $3,932! (That’s in Australian dollars)
- this will be divided up between the 7 artists to cover their base weekly wage, exclusive of on costs. That’s about $540 per person.
- 4% of this amount ($152) will go to Indiegogo to cover their services. (they have to cover their costs too!)
- we’ve opted for a flexible campaign; this means any amount you contribute will make it to the artists and that way we can guarantee they get a minimum wage for the premiere season. J

The Impact
Seven years in the making, Mother Tongue is the result of a dynamic collaboration between 25 culturally diverse artists. It has had established art organisations, producers and artists acclaim the work is 'pioneering' and 'important'.
Even with proven success and recognition we struggle to find funding and sponsors for culturally diverse arts in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. In 2010, Annalouise founded Groundswell Arts N.S.W. to advocate for the promotion of multicultural artists and arts productions in N.S.W.
So here we are, ‘Mother Tongue’ has been waiting patiently for the show to go on but without that much needed funding… the golden egg cannot be laid.
Risks & Challenges
The project itself does not pose any level of risk. The premiere season will go ahead with partial funds from Arts NSW for 4 performances between 3– 5 September, 2014. With immense gratitude to Bangarra Dance Theatre for their beautiful venue to perform in and Ausdance NSW for their fabulous marketing and administration support we believe we can achieve this wonderful dream.
What does pose a challenge is sourcing funds to employ the 7 performance artists for the entire week of work during production week; hence the crowd funding campaign.
