The Jane Goodall Institute Roots & Shoots Program and the Tanzania Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO) has partnered with high hopes to open the first animal rescue center in Tanzania.
Because we operate in a developing country, we must rely on
international donors to help make this goal a reality. Every little
bit helps!
Dar es Salaam is in Tanzania, bordering the Indian Ocean in East Africa. Dar es Salaam means “haven of peace.” But for animals in this fast-growing metropolis, it is anything but. Tanzania is a third world country, and people here face many challenges including extreme poverty, homelessness, hunger, HIV, malaria, and more.
In particular, people here do not have empathy to spare for street and wild animals, and so they are often neglected and starved, or worse, beaten, tortured and killed. Street animals, if they survive, breed, multiplying quicker than our current rescue efforts can afford.
Our goal is to build the first animal rescue center in Dar es Salaam that will accommodate the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned, abused and neglected animals.The facility will also serve as a base for community outreach and humane education programs, working particularly with the local Tanzanian Community.
THE NEED IS REAL!
Every day we get requests to take in lost dogs,
litters of kittens, starving puppies, and even baby monkies whose
mother was killed so her children could be sold.
The current state of animal welfare in and around Dar es Salaam can be cruel, with a desperate need of attention and a long-term, sustainable solution. That’s why we’re building a shelter, to be a real haven of peace long-term for all of Dar’s animals. We are out in the community every day, rescuing animals, doing veterinary outreach in underprivileged communities, providing free Spay/Neuter operations and performing Mass Rabies Vaccinations to avoid mass killings of dogs.
We do home visits, training on animal care and humane education in schools, and concentrate on finding every dog and cat in our care a forever and loving home. We strongly believe that by teaching the community and children to be kind to animals you help pave the way to a brighter future for all living beings.

We Need Your Help to build an Animal Rescue Center that will serve as a model of compassion in the community and the base of our community outreach programs, humane education and the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of animals.
