We are asking for your help this holiday season to aid us in donating 20 new computers to the Star Shine School; in this way, we can allow this dream of bringing kids together in peace to continue.
In a world with a growing reliance on technology, Star Shine School is severely lacking. As teachers at this school, Stephanie Chaga, a junior at Gettysburg College, and Neila Gross, a senior at Notre Dame University, have decided to harness the joy and goodwill of this holiday season to try
and give back to the community that has given them so much . While Stephanie prefers teaching English to the nursery and P1, she recognizes that the lack of books in their library does nothing to help the students' English develop since the best way to further a language education is to have resources readily accessible to the students as they progress in their studies. Neila, a Chemical Engineering student, has been teaching math and science to P4, P5, and P6 (the equivalence of 5th, 6th, and 7th grade). After teaching more than 50 kids in a classroom about computer parts and using her small teacher's manual to show what a computer battery looks like, it became apparent that the technological comforts we are so freely given in our hometowns are out of reach to the kids at Star Shine School.
It is for these reasons we are fundraising to increase the value of Star Shine School's education program through computer and English literacy. Each computer costs 350 dollars, while books are 5-10 dollars per book. With a normal class size around 40 students, our goal is to fundraise for 15 computers so that the kids can work in pairs or the class can be split for computer time. As people who have had access to higher education and the tools that come with it, it is crucial that we do our part and give back. The kids of Star Shine School are more than worthy and deserving of this opportunity.
