The Edinburgh Castle Pub has been around for sixty years. The old bar has passed through ups and downs, and rounds and rounds. The booths and balconies are quiet, now.
Those of us who work there have been laid off like so many others. We know that many of our customers are on fragile economic floors. Our thoughts are with you. We look forward to serving you our Recovery Special - a whisky and a PBR - when the door opens again.
The Castle has hosted many events over the years ~ stage plays like Trainspotting and Bouncers, readings from hundreds of writers and poets from around the world, Litquake was founded here, comedy, film nights, the legendary Castle Quiz, hundreds of bands, arts festivals, art openings, and a raft of other parties and eccentric events ~ even Hollywood loves the Castle (So I Married an Axe Murderer and Venom were filmed under its banners and on its famous bar top).
A painting of the staff from the bar in the 90's hangs on the wall, painted by Jill McVarish. Perhaps, once the crisis is over, we will commission another painting. One that sets the Castle towards the future. We're all under siege right now. We hope to lower the drawbridge again to bring back life to the balconies and the booths.
