Six (6) years ago, this group of youngsters began their journey together at a Chinese Immersion Public Charter School in the District of Columbia, Washington Yu Ying. In their daily life at Washington Yu Ying, they learn about Chinese dynasties, the Great Wall, and the way of life in China. They sing Chinese songs and practice math in Chinese.

As lively and as inquisitive as they are, they are still quite young at 10 and 11 years old, some of them having never been away from their parents for more than a night or two. Next summer however, the group heads to mainland China, where these students will discover the place of origin of their adopted language. These children will live and attend school and summer camps with their Chinese counterparts, a visit which will no doubt be a game-changer in their quest to more fully understand the Chinese language and culture.

Such an opportunity doesn’t come along very often. Yet it is the perfect chance for citizens of different countries to understand better each other’s cultures and start building relationships across national frontiers. While it may be difficult to change the perspectives of adults, it is more likely to be successful with young minds that are more open to understanding differences. The earlier one begins to learn a language and culture, the more fluent they will become.

Many of our youngsters aspire to be lawyers, architects, doctors and engineers, but they also desire to become world leaders, activists, actors, scientists, musicians. Becoming socially and culturally adept in Chinese culture will be an important part of their success. Help us make this happen!
Please give often and generously, but EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS. We can only do this with your support!
