The Main Story
Assisting dogs with neurological issues is truly a labor of love at DRBC. Our commitment has not gone unnoticed, as just the other day, one of our partnered shelters in Maryland reached out with a heartfelt request concerning a special little guy named Gilbert. While the exact cause remains uncertain, Gilbert appears to be suffering from a condition known as cerebellar hypoplasia.
So, what exactly is cerebellar hypoplasia, and how can we all unite to support Gilbert?
Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) in dogs is a neurological condition resulting from the incomplete development of the cerebellum—the brain region responsible for coordination and balance—during gestation. This condition manifests in various symptoms, including tremors, uncoordinated movements, and difficulties with balance. Importantly, CH is not a degenerative ailment, meaning it will not worsen over time.
Gilbert is an incredibly loving soul, and with proper specialized care, his future holds much promise; however, it’s crucial to obtain a clear diagnosis, and he will require additional tailored support along the way. Thankfully, we have a comprehensive plan in place, so we invite you to stay engaged and join Team Gilbert!
Our Plan
We will approach Gilbert's care systematically and thoughtfully. Here’s how we plan to proceed over the coming days:
- Upon his arrival, Gilbert underwent a thorough examination, after which we sent his blood and urine samples to a reference laboratory for in-depth analysis. Cost: $575
- Next, it’s time for a special trip to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital to consult with the exceptional Dr. Eric Glass. Cost: $375
- There is a possibility that Gilbert will need an MRI. Cost: $5500
- To assist with his balance and mobility, Gilbert will certainly need a customized 4-wheel cart. Cost: $600
The expenses add up quickly, don’t they? So why put in the effort? Because every life holds immense value here at DRBC and this little pup, who is only two years old, deserves every opportunity we can provide.
Your Role
Gather around, friends! We strongly believe that Gilbert has a tremendous chance for a long and fulfilling life, but no singular effort will suffice. It will take a village to make this happen—so please share Gilbert’s story, tell your friends, and let’s raise as much support as possible! He truly needs you and we earnestly ask you to make a difference today!
Keep in mind, your generous support is vital and immensely appreciated. Like many non-profit organizations, DRBC operates as a 501(c)(3) and relies solely on the dedication of volunteers. For over 41 years, we have been passionate about rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing dachshunds while educating families about this wonderful breed. We sincerely welcome and encourage your benevolent tax-deductible donations. Please, join us in our mission to help them.
We invite you to stay connected for updates on Gilbert’s journey. Until then, Gilbert, all the wonderful rescue dachshunds and the entire DRBC Team extend their heartfelt gratitude to you.
