Life is hard for an animal on the streets of Afghanistan, each day is a battle to find food, a safe place to sleep and escaping serious injury and disease. Nowzad’s mission has always been to improve the welfare of these animals and to help where it is most needed. Sparky’s story is simple but so very common in Kabul sadly. These poor dogs and cats scurry about the streets at all hours looking for food and shelter and the chances of being hit by car, truck or motorbike is particularly high. If hit, many are sadly left to suffer, unacknowledged and uncared for, but Sparky was one of the lucky ones.
Sparky was found by our team in December 2024 in a truly distressing state after being the victim of a car accident. Completely paralysed from the waist down, his hind legs were lifeless, leaving him unable to move or even just fend for himself. A thorough examination to determine the extent of his injuries revealed a devastating diagnosis. With a broken back, both of Sparky’s hind legs had to be amputated to give him a chance at a pain-free life.
With expert care, rehabilitation, and an indomitable spirit, Sparky made a remarkable recovery. Now, with the help of a specially designed wheelchair he moves around so freely - playing with such confidence and energy, hence his name. And he truly is one of the friendliest and sweetest dogs.
Now Sparky has been given the chance of a lifetime – a forever home and the chance to live a happy carefree life with his very own family. A huge garden with it’s own woodland and daily runs on a nearby beach. The stuff of dreams. He will be joining the family’s resident rescue cat and dog and thankfully he has proven to be super friendly with the cats in the Nowzad cat room and loves playing with the other dogs at the shelter so we know he’s going to love life with his new family who cannot wait to welcome him home. New custom made wheels are awaiting him and specially built ramps to allow him to be as independent as possible and join in all the family activities. His new family say ‘We are so looking forward to meeting the little guy, he’s already stolen our hearts’.
