Sports programs for kids

After the US, what country provides more Major League Baseball players than any other country in the world? If you said the Dominican Republic, you’re right!

In the baseball-loving DR, young and old alike look up to professional ballplayers, who are some of the most admired public figures in the country. Volleyball is hugely popular, too, especially with Dominican girls. The Dominican Women’s National team, the Queens of the Caribbean, has made headlines with their victories on the international sports stage, giving girls powerful role models.

However, many Dominican youth who want to emulate their sports heroes don’t have access to baseballs, bats, or volleyballs. It’s not uncommon to see kids so determined to play that they make do with nothing more than rocks and sticks.  

With your help, Seacology will change that by giving  baseball and volleyball equipment to underserved youth in the Dominican Republic. This simple program will promote good health through physical activity, teamwork, and leadership among Dominican youth, as well as girls’ empowerment through sports.

Protect threatened ecosystems

But these young people will get more than just bats and balls – they will also get hands-on training in protecting the country’s threatened coastal environment. They will learn why coastal mangrove forests are crucial to the health and economic well-being of Dominican communities. They will also take a hands-on role in planting trees and cleaning up the coastlines—building skills and gaining pride in the process.

The loss of mangrove forests is the most important environmental issue facing the Dominican Republic today. These trees save lives by shielding communities from hurricanes, provide a nursery for juvenile reef fish, and prevent erosion. Perhaps most important, mangrove ecosystems mitigate global warming by trapping huge amounts of carbon. Dominican youth can be a key part of the solution if they are given the right tools and inspiration – with some free sports equipment in exchange for their commitment to helping the environment. That’s what we call a win-win!

Our goal is to raise $15,000 to support this innovative initiative. 100% of proceeds will go directly to providing Dominican youth with sports equipment.
