Commemorative Air Force hasn't added a story.
The historic C-47 aircraft known as That’s All, Brother is gearing up for a remarkable journey that will take it across the Atlantic in June 2024 as part of the D-Day Squadron Legacy Tour. This extraordinary undertaking will see That’s All, Brother participating in commemorative events, including flyovers and airshows, serving as a living testament to the indomitable spirit of its era.
Joining a fleet of other iconic military transport aircraft from the United States, That’s All, Brother is set to embark on an adventure that thousands of eager onlookers will witness. Together, these American C-47 Skytrains will traverse the North Atlantic before flying over the historic beaches of Normandy, France, as they did 80 years ago. It is a journey that not only pays tribute to the heroics of World War II but also reminds us of the enduring legacy of the Greatest Generation.
Following the commemorative events honoring the D-Day anniversary, the tour will continue its flight path, heading toward Germany to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. These events will provide display and educational opportunities, allowing the public to connect with this pivotal chapter in world history in select European cities.
The logistics of orchestrating an international trip of this magnitude are extensive, and the associated costs are high. However, the mission of the Commemorative Air Force to educate, inspire, and honor is valued by people across the globe. The profound importance of this mission underscores the commitment and dedication required to make this historic journey possible.
For That’s All, Brother, this tour is not merely a symbolic gesture; it's a poignant connection to history. On June 6, 1944, this very aircraft led the main airborne invasion of Normandy, a mission that would forever alter the course of humanity. Following D-Day, That’s All, Brother continued to serve in Operations Dragoon, Market Garden, Repulse, and Varsity before returning to the United States. In 2015, the CAF initiated a campaign to acquire and painstakingly restore the airplane to its original D-Day configuration. With the invaluable support of generous donors and passionate volunteers, "That’s All, Brother" was restored to her 1944 condition and became airworthy again in 2018. Since then, this venerable aircraft has stood as a flying museum, a tribute to the valor of the servicemembers who participated in the historic D-Day invasion.
Hank Coates, the CAF's President, said, "It is a privilege for the CAF to attend these important anniversaries to honor the American spirit to fight for freedom and aid others in need. Attending and supporting events like this help ensure that this history is not lost and sends a message that the memory and significance of the brave actions of our heroes is still appreciated and won't be forgotten for generations to come."
As preparations for the tour intensify, ensuring the aircraft is equipped with the necessary gear for the month-long expedition is paramount. The CAF invites you to share this story and support this monumental project.
If you believe that D-Day and the valor of the veterans who played an integral role in ending World War II should not be forgotten, there are numerous ways to support the CAF's mission. Your support can help ensure that the memory of these brave heroes remains vibrant and meaningful, a lasting testament to their courage and sacrifice for generations to come.
