Vancouver Cycling Without Age Society is a registered charity that takes elders for recreational bike rides on trishaws (three wheeled rickshaws). The volunteer “pilot” pedals in the back and two passengers ride in the front. The time spent between pilots and passengers is one of storytelling, connections, fresh air, access to nature, and barrier-free activity.
The population we serve is primarily elders who live in long-term care homes. Many of these elders have no family members or visitors, and they rarely have the opportunity to leave the care home or spend time in a different setting outdoors. Trishaw rides are accessible and highly therapeutic.
Our goal is to break elders free from social isolation and make them smile with the simple act of a bike ride. We enable those who can’t ride a bicycle themselves to share in the joy of the activity and offer continued mobility outdoors. We give them the right to wind in their hair.
