In the canon of Western Music certain groups remain veiled from view by classical music audiences. The mission of our organization seeks to present performances where these compositional voices become “unveiled”.
Marcia J. Citron, a recognized leader on the topic of "Gender and the Field of Musicology", points out the following in her 1993 article in the journal "Current Musicology" https://currentmusicology.columbia.edu/article/gender-and-the-field-of-musicology/:
"Gender also has much to offer historiography . . . . Of the diverse topics in historiography, one of the most important is canon formation. . . . Here gender is critical: it provides an analytical category that can expose many of the assumptions and ideologies behind seemingly value-free conditions that have promoted the Western canon (or canons). For example, gendered ideologies behind creativity and professionalism tell us a great deal about why and how women composers have been excluded from mainstream practices in art music. They also reveal many of the conventions that led to the inclusion of certain works and composers. Thus, gender is not confined to marginal groups but has the ability to probe the central tradition and how it became that way. "
These challenges and issues also apply to other groups that are not a part of the majority in the canon: white, straight, males. Citron's more recent work since she wrote the above shows that some progress has been made against "canon formation", but she rightly points out that more must be done. https://www.jstor.org/stable/30163078?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents
This work is critical for what we believe should be a world-wide commitment to make a fairer, more representative repertoire to be enjoyed by a classically interested public. Expanding the representation of composers, also expands the audience/community and creates a more energized and engaged community. This mission directly improves the quality of performance worldwide.
