PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Jewpanese Project (formerly, the JEWPANESE Oral History Project) is an international multi-phase project exploring the lived experiences and stories at the intersection of being Jewish and Japanese, conducted by Carmel Tanaka! Follow the journey on Instagram @JewpaneseProject!

PROJECT PHASES

• Phase I - Collection of Interviews: This phase was funded by Carmel Tanaka’s fellowship as an Anti-Defamation League Collaborative for Change Fellow (2022-2024). The original project proposal was to collect 20 interviews across Canada, U.S., Israel and Japan. The response for interviews was bountiful with a total of 90+ worldwide, increasing the project size 4 times!
  
  
• Phase II - Research/Data: As of June 2023, the Jewpanese Project became recipient of a Jews of Color Initiative research grant to aggregate data from the U.S. based interviews. As of October 2023, also became a project under the U.S. fiscal sponsorship of Mission.Earth to help with grants and donations for future phases of the project.
  
  
• Phase III - Archives: Starting in mid-May 2025, a selection of U.S.-based interviews along with its aggregate data will become available for a "soft launch" of the Jewpanese Project Archives.

PROJECT COSTS

Donations made today will go towards processing more interviews from the remaining 60+ interviews worldwide for the archives. The first goal is to get to $1,800! Each interview takes approximately one week to process and however long to connect with the interviewee to go over edits. If you are interested in supporting a specific interview or an interview from a specific region and wish to direct your donation accordingly, just contact Carmel!

HOW TO DONATE?

There are two ways to donate to the project:

• Option #2 (quick & easy way): Please donate via this platform, FundRazr. Please consider selecting "cover fees" at checkout as all donations via FundRazr are subjected to a combined 7.9% platform fee + $0.30 transaction fee.

Please note Mission.Earth can accept donations from anyone anywhere, but only U.S. donations will be issued tax receipts. Kindly note that the first $5,000 raised is subject to a 6.5% administrative fee by Mission.Earth (regardless of above donation options).
