A Little Bit About Us
Heart of the Catskills Humane Society is a small grassroots animal shelter organization whose mission is to promote and advance humane and protective care and treatment of animals through education, spay-neuter programs and other activities that enable people to enjoy animal companionship and to operate a shelter for lost, strayed or homeless dogs and cats.
To accomplish that mission, HCHS provides shelter services for cats and dogs in 17 towns with approximately 47,000 residents. We are responsible for 150 to 300 animals a day at our shelter in Delhi, NY and in addition, we have operated the PetSmart cat adoption center in Kingston, NY since 2007.
The shelter provides excellent animal care, cleaning and sanitation, a nutritional Science Diet feeding program, basic physical exams, vaccinations and de-worming, blood collection and feline diagnostic testing, canine heartworm testing and spaying and neutering for all cats and dogs entering the shelter.
We reach out to our community through various types of programs, including public low income spay/neuter vouchers, humane education programs, a “Seniors for Seniors” adoption program, a pet therapy program with the local rehabilitation center and nursing home, a Barking Books literacy program, and we serve as a community service worksite for students and individuals.
HCHS receives approximately 90% of our operating funds from public support, including those raised by several events throughout the year like the annual Dog Walk to help raise the funds necessary to support the continued operations of the shelter, currently about $1,500 per day and we work very hard to earn every dollar and to keep costs down while also providing the best care possible for all our furry residents.
