Fi 156 Storch's History

Wherever the German Army was in World War II, the trusty Storch was likely close by with an important role to play. This aircraft is one of only four surviving examples of an Fi 156 D, the dedicated air-ambulance model, which features an enlarged fuselage door, two stretchers for injured soldiers, and even a collection tray for blood. This aircraft was recently featured in the exhibit “Secrets of World War II” at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library from April through October 2022.

Storch's New Mission

The Storch tells an often avoided topic of the historic aircraft of the Luftwaffe. It is important for organizations that can tell the full story appropriately to do so. And from a technical perspective, the Storch is a great aircraft to use in teaching about aerodynamic design features such as full-span leading edge fixed slats, drooping ailerons, and low-wing loading that made this performance possible. The Storch is a living history demonstration like none other, combining an impressive demonstration of unique flight characteristics with the often obscured stories of the Luftwaffe.

How You Can Help

In order to return this Storch to the sky, much work is needed to inventory all of the parts and components needed. This year, any funds donated to support this project with help to locate and procure the missing pieces are required to make this airplane whole again and allow the Storch to tell a rare story in history.
