Heart of America Wing hasn't added a story.
SUMMARY
This primary trainer airplane has been flying for the Heart of America Wing since the group was founded in the 1980s. The restoration project of this PT-19 is groundbreaking in that it involves a cooperative effort between two CAF Units: Dixie Wing and Heart of America Wing. Working on this project together has allowed volunteers from both Units to exchange ideas, share the workload, and develop relationships.
HISTORY
Olathe Naval Air Station, now called New Century Air Center, is home base for the Heart of America Wing. As a primary training base during World War II, Olathe NAS, had scores of training airplanes, like this PT-19. Although this PT-19 represents an Army designation, rather than Navy type, it still illustrates the type of airplane aviation cadets first used during flight instruction. To honor the roots of Olathe NAS, this PT-19 has the original Olathe NAS logo painted on the nose of the aircraft. This iconic image helps preserve that local history and create a real connection for people in the community to the War.
PROGRESS
Volunteers from the CAF Dixie Wing are currently rebuilding the wings, while Heart of America Wing volunteers are restoring the fuselage, engine, and avionics. The plan is to bring the aircraft back to airworthy status so that it can continue to fulfill the CAF Mission for years to come.
TASK AHEAD
There are still some major tasks to be addressed before the aircraft will fly again. This includes an engine overhaul, avionics upgrade, fuselage recover, and painting the aircraft.
VISION
The Heart of America Wing uses their PT-19 as part of the ride program and demonstrates how the aircraft was used to train young military pilots during World War II. In addition, the aircraft is used to overfly parades, veteran funerals, and memorials, promoting awareness and appreciation of America's military history.
