Meadow Park Middle School hasn't added a story.
Our students come from many different academic and social backgrounds-- and these Robotics Kits allow every student to be successful inventors and designers!
Of our 870 students, there are 33 different languages spoken, 43% students receive free/reduced price lunch, 13% identify as "mobile students," and 34% who are English Language Learners. Our students are inventors in any field they wish, and many have not had access to experiences to help them realize it yet, due to lack of equitable access to technology-- We hope to close this opportunity gap to promote diversity as well as gender equality in coding, with these Hummingbird Robotics Kits!
The Hummingbird Robotics Kit allows students to program and build robots built from electronic components and simple materials. The kits fully engage diverse kinds of learners, including reluctant learners, and provide opportunities for students at all interest and skill levels. They begin with block coding and simplified electronics, then are able to advance at a pace that is comfortable to more complex and innovative robots. Some of our students and teachers have used our limited kits to create teaching models, visual demonstrations of concepts, and problem-solving inventions while gaining programming, engineering, and creative design experience in all stages of the process-- and we hope to share this experience with more students over the years through the purchase of this reusable, class set!
The money will pay for a class set of Hummingbird Duo Base Kits with additional sensors, so small groups (2-3 students) can create robotic models in science class, and use that knowledge to build models in other classes. The kits are excellent for beginners, as well as students with more coding experience. Students can successfully create a simple project with their first Hummingbird experience and can extend their learning by eventually moving from Hummingbird block coding into Arduino. These kits teach students the necessary skills of collaboration, design process, mechanics, and coding to be successful in school and beyond!
Please help us fund this project so students can experience this type of learning for years to come!
Budget:
We are requesting $2,499.00 to purchase the Hummingbird Duo Large Classroom Kit for 24-36 students from Birdbrain Technologies ( http://store.birdbraintechnologies.com/default.asp ). Shipping will be free.
This kit includes 12 Hummingbird Duo controllers with an array of motors and sensors to serve beginners through students with more experience. It is a reusable class set to support student learning for many years to come!
