Devil Dog Squadron hasn't added a story.
The CAF Devil Dog Squadron tells the story of the VMB squadrons in the Pacific. Equipped with radar and flying at night, these aircraft hunted enemy shipping, interrupting enemy supplies. With .50 caliber machine guns, HVAR rockets, torpedoes, and skip bombing techniques, these aircraft were lethal to enemy shipping. At wars end, PBJs had sunk over 195,000 tons of ships and supplies. In 1946 the VMB squadrons were decommissioned, and the valor and heroics of their members became a footnote of the war in the Pacific.
The Devil Dog Squadron educates the public of those Marine aviators that sacrificed so much for our freedom. With its dark blue paint and bulldog nose art, the rumble of its Wright R-2600 engines never fails to stir emotion in the crowd. The CAF Devil Dog memorializes VMB 612, ship # 3 that participated in 22 missions and was credited with destroying 4 enemy ships. Ship # 3 departed on its 23rd mission and never returned.
The Devil Dog Squadron maintains a very busy schedule during the air show season, attending numerous air shows and other events all over the country. This busy schedule takes a toll on the engines and other consumable parts. Our maintenance team works hard to ensure the aircraft is always ready for its next mission. That includes making sure the engines are always fresh and having a spare engine on standby should the need arise to replace an engine mid- season. Having put our spare engine into service last year, it is now time to send the replaced engine out for overhaul. This is a costly procedure, but necessary in order to continue telling the story of VMB 612 and ship # 3. All donations, large or small, are deeply appreciated.
