Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
When it rains, it pours....Cody has been through too much already at 6 years young...he lost his Mom when she had to go into assisted care and went to live with his Human Brother, and then yesterday, on Christmas, Cody lost the use of his legs.
Cody's New Dad has had more than his fair share of challenges in the last little while and now Cody was sick on top of it. Cody's new Dad got him some pain meds and anti-inflammatories, but knew that he was in over his head and could not give Cody the surgery or time and attention needed after to recover and so reached out to DRSF for help.
We talked through how surrender works and that we could absolutely be there to help both Cody and his Dad, but that once he surrendered, there was no way Cody could come back to them. Cody's Dad said that he understood and that at this time, he wasn't equipped to care for Cody and so arrangements were made to get this beautiful 6 year old boy down to Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Miami.
Dr. Wong and his team waited after the practice closed, the day after Christmas, to stay to examine Cody as time is of the essence with IVDD....the exam results were not good...Cody was down in the back with no deep pain perception. As he always does, Dr. Wong gave us the odds - 50% chance of recovery with Surgery, 40% chance of no recovery and use of wheelchair, 10% chance of meylomelasia, 5% chance of recovery if we did nothing. What did we want to do?
We are not "Dachshund Only if they are not Paralyzed", we are not "Dachshund Only with a 90% chance of guaranteed outcome", and we sure as heck are not "Dachshund We Only Do Surgery If There is Deep Pain", we are Dachshund RESCUE.
It is nearly impossible to adopt out a paralyzed doxie in a cart and only less difficult to find foster homes to work with these dogs. If we don't take a chance that not only drastically reduces Cody's options, but could potentially makes is impossible for us to help another down dog down the line, so tonight, at 8:30 PM, with only a 50% chance of recovery, we are "Dachshund Going to Surgery" with Dr. Wong and his team prepping Cody to fix his left sided T11-13 discs and give him every chance we can.
In the last few weeks you have provided care and funding for Parvo, Lepto, broken Pelvis', abandoned paralyzed senior dachshunds, and provided life saving blood transfusions and we are back again, to ask your support for another little one in need, another little one who without the safety net YOU provide, would have no options but the shelter. Will you help us be there for Cody like you have done for so many others?
