History:
The PT-26 is the enclosing canopy version of the PT-19. This monoplane primary trainer aircraft served with the United States Army Air Forces, RAF and RCAF during World War II. In September 2011, this aircraft experienced an off-airport landing and was substantially damaged. The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron, elected to take on the aircraft project and return the aircraft to flyable status as they had the resources and personnel expertise having returned two other aircraft to airworthy status.
Progress:
As of November 2020, the outer wing panels have been inspected and returned to service, the wings are currently covered with fabric and painted although awaiting roundels. The center wing section was not damaged and ready for service. The empennage was not damaged and ready to be reassembled on the fuselage. A spare engine is ready for the aircraft, only minor needs are required to make the engine operable. The canopy system for the aircraft has had the glass replaced in the front windscreen, the enclosures are ready for service. Replacement landing gear are available and completing their restoration. The fuselage cockpit instrumentation and plumbing is in progress. This winter, we plan to mate the fuselage to the wing center section and begin putting fabric on the fuselage, getting the empennage installed, installing and running the engine. Yet to be purchased is a propeller.
Tasks Ahead:
The heaving lifting remains to complete the project. The next tasks include assembly of the wings, fuselage, empennage, landing gear, engine and propeller.
Vision:
Upon completion of this restoration, the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will have two Fairchild aircraft of the same type. The squadron currently has an active rides program and has the capability to conduct tailwheel pilot training for the required FAA air regulation requirement of the Pilot in Command to have a tailwheel aircraft endorsement. Upon completion of this restoration, the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron intends to stand up a formation training program for the Fairchild aircraft type. As Oklahoma was the site of several British Commonwealth Air Training Plan schools to train commonwealth pilots for service in the Royal Air Force, this PT-26 will be the centerpiece of the squadron’s efforts of education on the subject.
