Elmonica Elementary School hasn't added a story.

Elmonica Elementary is one of the largest elementary schools in the Beaverton School District. We have an incredibly diverse student population - over 30 languages are spoken at our school. We are a Title 1 School that was recently awarded International Baccalaureate PYP status. Our teachers strive to create authentic, project-based learning opportunities for all of our students. 

Your support will bring Sphero robots into the hands of Elmonica students.  

We are requesting a 12 pack of Spheros for $1399.00.

That would include 12 Spheros with charging cables and everything we need to get started.

Every Sphero robot will be used in Engineering Design projects at all levels. The first project will be The Great Sphero Chariot Race:

Each team must design a chariot that will be carried by a Sphero robot. This chariot must carry a token around a predetermined track. The Sphero must be preprogrammed to successfully run the track while carrying the token in its student created chariot. The team that can successfully run the track in the shortest amount of time wins.

Students who demonstrate understanding can:


Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.
These standards will be addressed throughout the project and have been incorporated into our lesson plan. Day 1 of our project presents our students with a challenge that must be solved by designing a new product. This same day asks teams of students to sketch out their initial ideas. Lastly, all students will have the opportunity to test their design to check for weaknesses and have time to allow for a redesign.
 
Engineering design in the earlier grades focuses on introducing students to the design process. However, we believe that even our earliest learners are capable of creating a solution to a problem. By challenging our students to design a solution we are really challenging them to work cooperatively with an open mind and the ability to accept failure as a part of the engineering design process. This project will allow our teachers to help facilitate the engineering design process for our students as we let them take charge of their learning in a true student-centered project where the ultimate outcome is not success or failure but is rather the process of solving a problem.

The Spheros can be used in many grade levels in the future across the curriculum to support instruction with innovative ideas and engaging strategies.

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.

In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
