In the Dominican Republic, approximately 35% of women experience intimate partner violence. Unlike many other parts of the world, there are no government social programs or safety nets to help women safely escape abusive relationships or support their families as they rebuild. Victims are often forced to choose between staying in danger or leaving with nothing.

Katherine chose safety.

A courageous mother of three, Katherine recently found the strength to flee an abusive situation to protect herself and her children. While she successfully found a secure place to live, she had to leave every single piece of her life behind.

Right now, Katherine and her children are living in an empty home:

• They have no way to cook or store fresh food.

• They have no place to sit together as a family.

• Their only furniture is a single borrowed, rotten mattress.

• They face the constant worry of covering rent without a safety net.

• The children have no uniforms to attend school.

Imagine the immense courage it takes to escape a dangerous situation, only to land in a completely bare room with three young children looking to you for food and shelter. Katherine did the hardest part—she got her family to safety. Now, she needs a community to help her furnish that safety with basic human necessities and secure her peace of mind.
