Boukary Sawadogo - 2nd Year Welding Student
Boukary first felt pain a couple of years ago and went to a local clinic. They provided him with some medication but this has not really helped to solve his health problems. This was around the same time his father suddenly died, leaving just his mom to take care of the 5 children. Since Boukary is the oldest in the family he became responsible to help care for the family. His grandma told him that he needed to get training so he could financially for the whole family. Despite not being fully healthy, he applied for the CFPC welding program and he was accepted!
He has been one of the most reliable students and is always pleasant to be around. He will be graduating at the end of August and has already received his welding certificate from passing the government exams.
In the last month, he was not feeling well and was taken to the local hospital but they could not help him there either. The pain has been so intense that he often has to sit down. Boukary told the Basts that he had this pain earlier when his father died but, the family had no money to get testing done.
The Basts took him to a hospital and he had lots of tests performed and the doctors informed them that he had several kidney stones that would require surgery because they are too large to pass. The Basts have met with his family a few times and they told them that he will have to live with this pain because they don’t have the money to cover the cost of the surgery.
This doesn’t leave much hope for a young man that has the burden of providing financially and the responsibility of caring for his entire family at the age of 21.
It would be a great blessing to CFPC and Boukary's family if you could give generously to help cover the cost of his surgery. Then he can be healthy, hopeful and encouraged to use his new training and skills to work and support his family!
CFPC Vocational Centre, provides free practical skills training for young men to help break the cycle of poverty for them and their families by teaching the students employable construction skills.
Young men who receive an education have more opportunities for life and career. Most people work in farming on small plots of land, barely getting by.
Programs are available for a variety of construction trades (general construction skills, masonry, woodworking, and welding), and were developed for young men with basic education qualifications who need more education in order to earn a living wage and support their families. Each course runs for two years, with an emphasis on practical, on-the-job training. This leads to the transformation of neighbourhoods and the larger international community.
The qualifications obtained by graduating students are recognized by the Burkina Faso Ministry of Youth and Employment. The CFPC Vocational Centre also provides employment to local skilled tradesmen, who teach the students the practical skills required to graduate the programs.
