Summer is the hardest time of year for rescues and it has hit us particularly hard this year. We have been very busy rescuing a record number of dogs, and our vet bills have been higher than usual. Several dogs we rescued ended up needing more than basic vet care. We don't turn our backs on the the sick, injured or older dogs, and so our vet bills are higher as a result.
Sadly, we are now faced with a very difficult and distressing situation where we may have to stop intaking dogs for a while in order to reduce expenses and pay vet bills. We don't want to have to do this because the dogs need us. And we don't want to have to say "no" to a dog that would otherwise get euthanized at the shelter if we don't help. But it is getting to that point where we have to set some limits and scale back until we can raise more funds to cover the expenses related to our mission. So this is a very urgent, heartfelt plea for donations and the money we raise will directly go to saving more dogs from euthanasia!
Many people are on vacation this time of year and so adoptions decline and shelters fill up. It's when dogs need rescue the most because more dogs end up facing the euthanasia list this time of year at shelters. Maricopa county shelter system is only second to Los Angeles in number of intakes. Sadly, many of the dogs do not make it out alive because of the overwhelming numbers. This is a huge and very sad community problem.
Lucky Dog Rescue often steps up for the dogs that are injured or in medical need or older, while other rescues focus on just the "highly adoptables". We function solely on donations and on average each dog we rescue will cost us $500- $700 and our adoption fee is $250. We rely on regular donations from our supporters to make up the difference and allow us to keep rescuing and fulfilling our mission.
