Neal Shusterman's new book, Thunderhead, is set to release this January and we have been lucky enough to convince the author to come to Aloha High School as part of his book tour! Around 500-750 students will be attending this event in our auditorium.
While he is stopping at Powell's in Portland, that is simply beyond the reach of many of our students at AHS. We are a largely low-income school with about 60% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. With parents working extra jobs, child care concerns and transportation costs, travel to Portland to see an author isn't reasonable for many of our families. That is why hosting this event on campus is so exciting! Our students can be exposed to a professional author that is so popular amongst our students.
His book, Scythe has been a staple title in our classrooms and library. It speaks to students, makes them think and engages them as readers! We are asking for $600 to help cover the cost of the speaker's fee and bringing in additional books for students to check out following the presentation. Students will be hyped and we want extra books to get them reading! $20 will mean a book in the hands of a student to help build stronger, more excited readers.

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
