Renate Mueller was supposed to be golfing in Thailand this month. Instead, with COVID cancelling her golfing vacations this year, she is donating $10,000 to help Adopt-a-School.

"I thought if I can’t spend the money on golf holidays what should I do with it? I’ve been fortunate in my career and I’ve been able to accumulate a few shekels,” said Mueller, CPA/CA and a successful Vancouver businesswoman, president of Renate M. Mueller Consultants Inc., which specializes in business mergers and acquisitions.

Mueller read in The Vancouver Sun about the plight of impoverished children and families in B.C. unable to cope on low wages or social assistance -- being exposed to hunger and privation.

“I’m a subscriber to The Sun and I cry every time I read those stories of what children are suffering,” she said. “It’s a nightmare.”

“I know lots of golfers and so I want to issue a challenge to them to put the money they would have spent on golfing holidays to help these children,” she said.

Mueller has set a goal of $200,000 and is calling on individuals and companies to help meet that goal.

"I’m going for $200,000," she said. "I know lots of people in the business world and just think of all the big companies and corporations that donate to charities through golf tournaments which they now can’t hold.

“I am going to appeal to them to get involved, too. This is an opportunity for them and golfers to feed and clothe children and I can’t think of anything more important right now than doing that.”

In this year of the pandemic, our kids, our future, need all the help they can get. Please join in supporting Renate in her Challenge and extend the challenge to your golfing buddies. Together, you will make a huge difference.

This project is one of many received by The Vancouver Sun Children's Fund for our 2020/21 Adopt-a-School campaign.

Since the day our first Adopt-a-School news story was published in the fall of 2011, generous Vancouver Sun readers have helped us raise more than $6 million to improve the lives of B.C.’s neediest school children.

The money you donate helps teachers and school staff who are dealing with children suffering from the effects of poverty and enables them to provide breakfast or lunch, food at weekends, other necessities (like warm clothing) and educational experiences. We are grateful for your support, and for the opportunity to make a difference.

(100 per cent of donated funds are used for grants.  Admin & expenses are either supported by the Vancouver Sun newspaper or paid out of interest on investments.)
