History
“Ole Yeller” was built and took first flight in 1942. She is configured with a swivel back seat and a camera port in the belly. Capable armament was three 30-cal machine guns: one in the engine cowling on the top of the nose, one in the right wing and one in the rear cockpit…a camera gun In the left wing and bomb racks located under the wings. In addition to its primary mission as a trainer this aircraft could of served as a combat spotter and light attack plane.
Our SNJ-4 was used for pilot training during WWII, put into storage when that need slowed and brought back into service during the Korean Conflict. Navy pilots flew her for currency and towed the fabric sleeve targets used for gunnery practice.
“Ole Yeller” was handed over to the aircraft disposal unit located in California for sale, Richard Ferguson Sr. bought her in 1961 and did little to modify her further through the years. He flew his SNJ-4 with other T-6 that his buddies purchased at the same time. These pilots flew formation, aerobatics, and simulated dog fights at local air shows, local events and veterans ceremonies.
Richard Ferguson Sr. left “Ole Yeller” to his son upon his passing and she was hangered in San Marcos, Texas until Richard Ferguson Jr. donated her to the "Tex" Hill Wing located at Stinson Municipal Airport. “Ole Yeller” is now often seen flying solo or in formation in the San Antonio and Texas Hill country skies.
Project
“Ole Yeller” carries the patina of a long history…we would like to give her some TLC but never erase the signs of her rich and enduring past. At this time we would like to replace “Ole Yeller’s” Audio control panel (ACP).
