Montclair Elementary, 4th Grade Team hasn't added a story.
Hello from 4th grade! My name is Kyle Piper-Smyer and I love being an elementary school teacher. This is my 10th year teaching in Beaverton, where we're trying something new, innovative, and child-centered for math. We are using a math workshop model to help meet students where they are in mathematics and build the skills, curiosity, problem-solving, and perseverance that students will need to be life-long mathematicians and critical thinkers. Math workshop challenges students to solve complex real-world problems, but also includes skill review that's fun and engaging.
BUDGET:
To help students engage with each other and build their fluency, we need tools for small group and independent practice, such as:
- Versatiles, an independent and self-checked tool for students to practice skills. Children love to create the patterns alone or with partners. We are hoping to buy 6 sets for each classroom. ($360)
- Math Games like 24, Multiplication and Division War, Mathelogical Liar, Prime Climb and others. Students gain automaticity with facts and concepts when they apply them to fun, interactive games. Games help students enjoy math and build no skills in a low-stakes, entertaining environment. We are hoping to buy a variety of games for both 4th-grade classrooms to share. ($150)
- A subscription to Dynamath, Scholastic's Math-based magazine. Monthly issues connect math and literacy concepts, linking current events and real-world scenarios to mathematical thinking. Students will be challenged with logic, data analysis, pattern finding, factoring, fractions, and more. We are hoping to buy one full-class set to share between the two classes ($230)
All of these tools can be used for years to come to complement units in place value, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, measurement, and geometry. These materials allow the teacher to work one-on-one and in small groups with students while the rest of the class is focused, engaged, and energized by exciting new math resources. We particularly value the screen-free positive interaction that hands-on tools can provide our students. Thank you for supporting our work!
