Hello! My name is Katie Eubanks and I am a 5th grade teacher at Kinnaman Elementary. Each year, we take the 5th graders on one BIG field trip to visit Oregon State University. The 5th graders get to see a college campus, learn about science, tour the the school, and ask questions to a panel of current OSU students. The experience is one that our past 5th graders (even the Duck fans!) still bring up to us when they visit. This opportunity is their first glimpse at their future. It allows them to envision themselves going to college and it excites them for what is ahead.
This year, we would like to take our 125 students this tour April 7th. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of bus drivers in the Beaverton School District which means in order for us to be able to take our students on this trip, we need to use charter buses. The bus is estimated at $955.00. We are asking for you to help us inspire our students by gifting us the transportation to make this field trip happen.
One of the largest impacts has been the opportunity to listen to current OSU students of similar backgrounds talk to our students about funding for college. Most of our students think that college is unattainable because of the cost to attend. The students at OSU inform our 5th graders all about grants, scholarships, and loans and because of this I've had students tell me they had not seen themselves going to college before the visit and then after they were excited about college and hoped to be able to go.
AVID is an important part of the Beaverton School District and this field trip helps our 5th graders see the importance of AVID. They see why they should apply for AVID and that it will help them get to college and stay in college. This visit to OSU motivates our students to persevere and achieve.
Another important aspect of this field trip is it introduces our students to different jobs and paths in the STEM field. Many of the students on the OSU panel who talk with our students are women of color who are working in a science field.
It can truly be a field trip that can change the trajectory of these students lives. Please support us today!

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
