Elmonica Elementary hasn't added a story.
My name is Marissa Burke and I teach a group of 24 kindergarteners at Elmonica Elementary. My students come to school from all different places, speaking different languages and with a multitude of experiences that have made them into the 5 year old they are today. Some have just moved from different countries while others have lived across the street their entire lives. Each one of them brings something to our classroom, and together we work for our classroom to be a place where we can all grow and learn.
Our school is an IB world school and our students are encouraged to learn through inquiry. My students are curious and excited to learn. As their teacher, I want to provide them with rich experiences that allow them to grow their social-emotional skills, their motor skills, and communication skills in addition to the other academic skills we teach throughout the day. This is why I am looking to raise money to purchase supplies for play in our classroom. Some items we will purchase will include materials for dramatic play. Children love to act out the world that they see around them, and can do so by pretending to be at a grocery store, restaurant or acting through the use of puppets. We will also need art supplies. Students can express their thinking and feelings by creating with paint and playdoh. I will also purchase supplies for counting, sorting, building, items to be used on light tables, and items for building ramps Children learn about spatial awareness, cause and effect and counting through the use of these items.
The items will be used to meet not only social and emotional skills, but many state standards as well. Some of the math standards include: describing attributes of objects, make sense of problems and persevere when solving them, representing a numeral with quantities of objects. Additionally, students will meet literacy standards through retelling or creating their own stories in dramatic play, and through the use of writing in dramatic play (ie writing a restaurant menu).

When students are engaged and excited to learn, the classroom is an amazing place to be. Having these supplies will allow me to create experiences for my students to feel like they can explore and create in our classroom. Please donate to help support the learning of some incredible 5 and 6 year olds!
