Who Are We?
The Media Literacy Coalition is a group of thought leaders including public officials, legislators, journalists, educators and library scientists who have come together to combat the overwhelming wave of disinformation that weakens democracy, frays relationships among citizens, and ultimately renders us powerless to govern ourselves in a free society. We are proud recipients of second place in the 2024 California Journalism Award for Public Service for our MisInfo Day and other programming.
What's Our Mission?
Our mission is to heighten awareness of the critical need for media literacy--the ability to differentiate between fact and misinformation in all forms of media--and to provide the educational resources required to carry out that mission. We do this by:
- Providing up to date information from national advocacy partners on our website
- Organizing events for students and adults that provide a collaborative method of media literacy training
- Collaborating across the US with expert resources in the fields of media and news literacy
- Holding an annual "MisinfoDay" for high school students in partnership with the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public
How Can You Help?
In this mission, our fellow citizens are our partners.
We need your help so we can continue to teach students who will someday vote on the kind of country they want to live in. And adults, who are too often lost in the dark spaces of the internet, need the education we offer to make critical decisions affecting them and those they love.
Donate to help fund programs, volunteer at our events, send us your ideas, and suggest organizations who might benefit from our programs.
Please make a one-time or monthly tax-deductible donation today. Every gift is greatly appreciated and helps further Media Literacy Coalition's mission.
Help spread the word and share this campaign with friends and family via email, social media, and good ol' word of mouth.
Thank you!

The Problem We're Tackling (And Why It Matters)
People are overwhelmed with the amount of information we're bombarded with each day. It's hard to determine what is factual vs propaganda, misinformation or disinformation. Every person needs to know which information to trust when making life decisions or when voting for our leaders and what kind of country we want to have.
Our Solution
We work with high school students who primarily get their news from social media sites. Rather than "liking" a story and quickly passing it on to friends, we show them how to pause, think critically and do fact checking from reputable resources. High school students are the voters of tomorrow so training them in media literacy and critical thinking are vital ways to help preserve our democracy.
Adults need this kind of help as well so we host events and panel discussions to help foster an informed citizenry.
Why You'll Love Being Part of This
We are the first group in California doing this kind of work with high school students (modeled on years of successful programming at the University of Washington). Your support will make a difference in helping us promote programming that matters so we can bring this information to more schools and communities.
Ready to Make This Happen?
Your tax-deductible gift would enable us to host more media literacy events for our communities and spread the word about the dangers of misinformation/disinformation. Donations made from your retirement account (e.g., IRAs, 401(k)s, SEPs, etc.) will reduce, dollar-for-dollar, your taxable Required Minimum Distribution and thus your taxable income.
