BSD Community Transition Program hasn't added a story.
The Community Transition Program (CTP) works with students with various disabilities who are 18-21 years old and are transitioning out of high school and into the next chapters of their lives. We have great students who have incredible abilities and require accommodations and modifications to complete many daily living tasks such as shopping, planning meals, cooking and eating.
CTP works with students in areas such as food and nutrition, planning meals, shopping, and cooking. We expose students to all kinds of experiences while promoting as much independence as possible.
In the last 5 years, our program has grown from 75 students to about 125. As our population has grown, so have the needs of our students. CTP is in need of adaptive kitchen equipment to make our newly purchased food and nutrition curriculum as accessible as possible to 100% of the students in our program.
Students participate in food and nutrition instruction at many levels, using our curriculum, students are active participants; using electrical appliances and kitchen tools with supported, physical and verbal assistance and progress to higher independence levels where they can demonstrate safety rules when using kitchen tools.
By incorporating adaptive kitchen equipment into our daily food and nutrition instructions, students impacted by significant disabilities will be able to participate more independently with less physical and verbal prompts from transition teachers and staff. Students will gain confidence in their cooking skills and be more willing to participate in these important life skill activities within the school day and at home. Students will also explore aspects of vocational skills they may not have pursued in the past, opening up future employment interest opportunities in line with the State of Oregon’s Employment First initiatives from the Governor’s office.
Budget: $650
Money raised by this campaign will be used to purchase various items for our program's three teaching kitchens.
Items include pot stabilizers, one-handed can openers, nonslip materials, special cutting boards, scooper bowls, pot holder gloves, peelers, tongs, choppers, cookbooks, pizza, and butter cutters, and food storage items, etc.
Thank you for supporting our program and our students. We can't wait to share with you the success stories from upcoming cooking lessons and units that involve all students!
