Central Texas Wing hasn't added a story.
Although the P-39 Airacobra is less celebrated today, it was instrumental in early combat and training, molding legendary pilots into skilled aviators. Many of the American heroes we honor today launched their military careers flying the P-39 Airacobra.
History
This Bell P-39Q-5-BE, the second of its model, was delivered to the U.S. military in 1943 and served stateside for testing and training. Set for scrapping after the War, it was abandoned in New Mexico following an engine failure. Acquired by the CAF in 1962, it was fully restored in 1974 and has been maintained and operated by the Central Texas Wing for over 50 years. It is one of only three flyable examples of a P-39 Airacobra left today.
Project
During routine maintenance, it was discovered that the P-39 needed a new engine, prompting Central Texas Wing members to begin a more comprehensive restoration. Structural issues soon surfaced, requiring full-scale repairs. This project includes airframe and skin repairs, cockpit updates, and a new paint job. Funds raised from this year’s campaign will directly support cockpit restoration. The cockpit will be restored to near-original condition, with instrument refurbishment and updated radios to meet modern airspace requirements.
Objective
Keeping this Airacobra flying is vital for honoring early American fighter pilots and preserving a lesser-known chapter of World War II aviation history. While the P-39 never achieved the fame of later fighters like the P-51 Mustang, it played a critical role in early combat experiences for American fighter pilots. By keeping this rare P-39 flying, the CAF ensures that future generations can connect with the innovation and bravery of those early pilots. Supporting this project preserves a unique piece of aviation history and honors the legacy of American fighter pilots who helped shape the future of aerial combat.
