I'm Amy Fanning, a language arts and creative writing teacher here at Arts & Communication Magnet Academy, and I need your help to make sure our beloved Ballpoint project stays alive.

What is Ballpoint? As a culminating activity for the past four years, around 200 writing students have published their work in gorgeous, professional anthologies through Amazon's self-publishing arm. See past editions of our literary journal:

Why create Ballpoint? This project allows students to experience the seemingly endless revisions required for authentic, real-world publication; it honors their work as artists; and it fuels their passion for honing their craft. I receive notes from students telling me how proud and amazed their parents were of them -- and how proud they were of themselves for becoming "real" writers.

This project is the highlight of the year in my classroom. It's important to our students for a number of reasons. At an arts school like ACMA, it's critical that we showcase the work of word artists in the same way we do that of visual artists, actors, and dancers. A professional publication, such as Ballpoint, sends the message that writing is a valuable, life-affirming art and craft. In addition, real-world publishing, to an extent beyond any other classroom writing activity, reveals to students the importance of care, of craft, of precision in writing. And, finally, a publication like Ballpoint helps foster a school culture of writing, of valuing writing, which is a perspective our students must adopt so they can excel in high school, college, and in their future careers.

What do we need? To fund Ballpoint 2018, we need around $500 for the books, and another $100-$200 for our author event, which is when we reveal the books to the authors, host a reading for friends and family, eat snacks, and celebrate our accomplishment.

Thank you for helping to keep this special project going; it's become a tradition here at ACMA, one we so very much want to continue.

This project is supported by the Beaverton Education Foundation.
