Lone Star Wing hasn't added a story.
SUMMARY
Each aircraft has a story, and this PT-17 affectionately known
as 23 has a great one. More importantly though, 23’s story is far from
over. The PT-17 is an open cockpit biplane used as a primary trainer
for World War II pilots. This aircraft was rebuilt by and is
maintained by the Lone Star Wing. While the aircraft is currently
airworthy, the members of the small wing are anticipating an overhaul
will be needed soon.
HISTORY
The PT-17 Stearman, also called a Kaydet, served to train
aviators in the 1930s and 1940s. It was such a reliable and effective
trainer that not only the U.S. Army Air Corps, but the U.S. Navy and
the Royal Canadian Air Force all used the aircraft as part of their
program. American military pilots who learned to fly in a PT-17 would
have to solo in this aircraft type before receiving their pilot wings.
PROGRESS
In early 2000, two PT-17s that were badly damaged were donated
to the CAF. The donors requested that the CAF try to combine the two
aircraft together to create a fully functional flying PT-17. It took
approximately four years, but the volunteers made it happen. Once
completed, 23 was painted in U.S. Navy livery and returned to the sky
in 2005. Since then, the unit has managed to keep the aircraft in
great shape despite being a very small unit and performing nearly all
community programs, events, and flyovers at no cost.
TASKS AHEAD
Members of the wing want to be prepared for the upcoming costs
to overhaul the aircraft and have been diligently raising funds for
months. Unfortunately, COVID-19 hindered their efforts and they are
hopeful that the generous supporters of the CAF will help get the
overhaul funding back on track. Raising $15,000 during 12 Planes of
Christmas would be about a quarter of the money needed to cover the
costs for the aircraft.
VISION
The Lone Star Wing keeps an educational focus with everything
they do. Each ride in 23 includes a component to teach someone about
history. Since the aircraft was a primary trainer during World War II,
it lends itself to being a great tool to use as an introductory
aircraft for a rider. The local JROTC and the Girl Scouts have taken a
serious interest in this aircraft and in working with the wing.
Exciting things are ahead for this group.
ABOUT 12 PLANES OF CHRISTMAS
Each year the CAF holds an annual fundraiser to help support and highlight aircraft projects for planes in need of restoration, maintenance or repairs. Donors may contribute to a specific aircraft project or to the CAF’s Restoration Grant Fund.
