Lobo Wing hasn't added a story.
SUMMARY
This AT-11 is entering its 17th year of restoration and is
nearing the finish line. The Lobo Wing aims to get the AT-11 back in
the air before the end of 2021. The heavy restoration of the engines,
wings, etc. are complete. The Wing members now find themselves faced
with a lengthy punch list of small parts and items needed to finish
this restoration project.
HISTORY
This aircraft was used to train and prepare young soldiers for
combat. She was delivered fresh from the Beechcraft factory to what is
now called Kirtland Air Force Base, and was used in bombardier
training. She was one of 50 AT-11s that would eventually serve in the
Albuquerque area. This particular aircraft was number 15 off of the
assembly line. Once airworthy, she will be the oldest flying AT-11 in
the world.
PROGRESS
Donations from last year's 12 Planes of Christmas allowed Wing
members to acquire and install a new ADS-B Transponder to fill out the
basic but cost-effective avionics stack. This year volunteers rebuilt
the landing gear, finished the disc brake conversion and brake system
rebuild. The historic restoration of the cockpit is also nearly
finished with newly built floor boards. Thanks to very generous donor,
the first engine installation is near completion and work on the
second engine has begun.
TASKS AHEAD
When a single AN Fitting can cost $200 - the bill for small
aircraft parts can add up in a hurry. This year Lobo Wing members are
hoping to raise $3,500 to help cover the cost of small parts needed
that keep cropping up as they near the project's completion.
VISION
This aircraft has been a tremendous project for such a long
time, the group will finally be able to come up with some new programs
to build around the aircraft. Within the past year the Wing has
attracted some new younger members who have used their skills to
assist with this project. CAF Col. Mitch Wainwrights constructed a
complicated gun turret dome buck and CAF Col. Dustin Tilbury applied
the gorgeous final coat of Randolph color to the now perfect flight
controls. These young talented contributors will help see this
project through to the end.
ABOUT 12 PLANES OF CHRISTMAS
Each year the CAF holds an annual fundraiser to help support and highlight aircraft projects for planes in need of restoration, maintenance or repairs. Donors may contribute to a specific aircraft project or to the CAF’s Restoration Grant Fund.
