Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
December has not been kind to DRSF or doxies in South Florida in general. We have barely healed our hearts from losing Jenga and Diego, and don't even have Cody discharged or walking from his IVDD Surgery at SEVN last week or have Cinnamon, Zazu, or Days anywhere near funded. Surely the weekend would give us a break, right?... No dice.
Pam got a call from Southeast Veterinary Neurology about a little boy named Gio, who had gone down. His Mom was not equipped to care for him and had requested euthanization. SEVN asked if she would consider surrendering and she was agreeable. SEVN was half way there to saving Gio's life - Time to place the call - would DRSF take him in?
Pam got the call. No deep pain in the back makes a 50% chance of recovery after surgery which means a 50% chance of having a cart dog. Cart dogs are the hardest to find both foster and forever homes for. They most often stay in foster care for years and they often become forever fosters as we don't seem to have the words to inspire people to open their homes and hearts to these dogs. (Hansel and Sissy are only two of our IVDD survivors and have been with us since 2017....)
So you see, the question isn't just "do we think we can raise the funds to cover the surgery" the question is also "If Gio can't walk after the surgery, where will we find a foster to take him, likely for at least a couple years and cover any vetting he needs, monthly meds, a cart, etc for those years likely at a few more thousand dollars more and can we support another forever foster for the rest of their lives if need be?"
What could we say? Gio was a doxie who needed rescue, we are dachshund rescue, we don't turn dogs away. We cross our fingers and put our faith in the universe that if we are doing the right thing, somehow, someway, things will work out.
And so Gio is now a DRSF dog, and we are back again to ask your support for our 2nd IVDD case in the span of a week, and our 11th urgent medical need dog in the last 30 days. We can keep making miracles as long as you empower us to....can you help us make one for Gio?
