Rachel van Ellenberg hasn't added a story.
I was in university when I first learned about the horrific scope of human trafficking, and was particularly devastated by the sexual exploitation of children. I researched to learn about different organizations combatting this injustice, and a dream came true when I got the opportunity to intern with International Justice Mission (IJM) in their headquarters in Washington DC. For four months I got to learn from some of the smartest and boldest people combatting human trafficking, slavery, and other forms of injustice around the world, and made some pretty special friends.
Following this adventure, I moved to Calgary and hoped to find an
organization that was combatting human trafficking and exploitation on
a local level. I have been volunteering with Next Step Ministries in
various roles for the last five years, and have loved being involved
in a community that comes alongside women and provides support based
on their needs. Each woman grapples with struggles that are uniquely
her own, and I love how Next Step validates and celebrates each
person’s worth, journey, and identity. I am often humbled and
challenged by the generosity, strength, and perspectives portrayed by
the participants in the program.
When I learned about the Freedom 8848 challenge, I felt compelled to
join. I was excited that two of the partner organizations we would
support are dear to my heart, and I have directly seen how the work
they do matters to individuals that have faces, names, and stories.
It’s been great to learn about how Brave Education works to prevent
trafficking in Canada in the first place. Although I know it will be a
huge challenge to hike 9 peaks in three days, the struggle will be
worth it to support those working on the frontlines to fight human trafficking.
Some of the women in the Next Step program have little to no community before entering the program. I never want to take for granted the amazing community of family, friends, coworkers, and church members on whom I can rely. I am hoping to rally my community to show the women in Next Step that they are not alone, that their presence matters, that they have value, and that they belong to a community who cares.

After 6 men sat together in the Bow River basin and discussed the GIANT of
an issue of SEX TRAFFICKING, it was easy to use Mt. EVEREST as a metaphor.
-
-
- - "Standing at the base of Everest it seems insurmountable, too big to conquer, but the reality is, it isn't. The first step is to decide to pack a bag and move towards it." - Rem (Founder) |
Why 8848? Because, Mt. Everest is 8848m tall. The idea was born to summit Everest not overseas but, here in the Alberta Rocky Mountains. These men were inspired to create The Freedom 8848 Team Everest Challenge as a justice initiative of 4th Musketeer Canada following a 72 hour wilderness journey called Extreme Character Challenge -XCC.
-
The Freedom 8848 Team Everest Challenge was created to raise funds, awareness and most of all empathy for those who have quieted voices. To support and find ways to protect those who are enslaved, on a recovery journey, the frontline organizations, our children, and anyone else who is directly or indirectly involved.

-- - - The event is split into 4 tiers:
|
-
-
"This mission needs your help!"
-
-
As one of the Freedom8848 supporters put it:
-
" I hope... that they don’t only climb the equivalent of Everest:
they move the equivalent of Everest."
-
The funds raised are donated to carefully selected organizations.
Freedom 8848, their partners, and all it's participants sincerely ask for your support as we enter the third of many annual events this August 18-21, 2022.
We believe with your help we can become the
"...GROUNDSWELL of people standing together moving mountains for justice."
-
Can you IMAGINE?? We can!!
