In 2016 the Gulf Coast Wing of the CAF was assigned the popular twin-engine tail dragger commonly referred to as a “Twin Beech,” a Beechcraft model 18D that was manufactured in 1947. This aircraft is painted in Navy livery and marked as a U.S. Navy JRB Expeditor. It is configured to seat six passengers in VIP comfort and has participated in the Living History Flight Experience program for seven years. The sturdy transport sports an admiral’s stars and crisp Navy blue colors, and is in high demand at airshows and barnstorming events.

The Expeditor carries two Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial engines generating 450 horsepower each. Over the last three years we have replaced both engines with the help of our 12 Planes supporters. Now it's time to ensure we have the right inventory of spare and replacement parts to ensure its safe operation. A backup propeller needs an overhaul, and at least one fuel pump and one generator need to be on the shelf as well. 

In the coming year, this aircraft and its stable mate, the World War II veteran SNJ advanced trainer, will continue to present “America Trains for War,” a performance that describes and displays their contribution to aviation training during the war, including the many roles that the durable Twin Beech played in those years as a navigation and bomber trainer. 

A contribution to the Twin Beech will help us to complete the spares inventory so we’ll be ready to fly into action in Spring 2024. 

The Gulf Coast Wing tours routinely from April to November each year to airshows, barnstorming events, civic events, and flyovers, carrying the history of WWII military aviation to the public. We engage with ROTC units, scout troops, Civil Air Patrol, schools, and even universities. The JRB Expeditor is wonderfully popular with the public, and with the help of our supporters can continue her career bringing history to life, one amazing flight at a time.
