Indiana Wing hasn't added a story.
Big Oily Beast (BOB)'s History
This aircraft was manufactured in 1943 by Beech Aircraft of Wichita, Kansas, as a Navy/Marine SNB-2. BOB served in three major wars – World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. In 1954, the aircraft was re-manufactured by Beech and designated by the Navy as a model SNB-5P, a photo reconnaissance trainer. Two special glass photo ports on the bottom of the aircraft and removable safety floor panels are characteristic of this configuration.
BOB's New Mission
The dedicated members of the Indiana Wing have breathed new life into this beautiful aircraft. The enthusiasm surrounding the aircraft has translated into new members taking an interest in flying warbirds. Additionally, the aircraft is often a major attraction at aviation events. The members of the Indiana Wing enjoy displaying this aircraft so people can see the technology, and robustness of the aircraft used during World War II. Unit members explain the functions and history of photo-reconnaissance and its importance during wartime. With a new engine in place the Wing wants to embark on a southern winter air tour to bring the history, education and inspiration of this classic Warbird to those outside of Indiana. Your support will make this sharing of a true treasure possible.
How You Can Help
The current engine has very few hours left on it. This means that to keep BOB flying next year, the aircraft is going to need a new (rebuilt) left engine. Contributions of any size can help keep this Midwest-based SNB in the air. From $30 for nuts and bolts to $100 for an intake valve, or even $1,500 for a propeller blade.
ABOUT 12 PLANES OF CHRISTMAS
