2 Years running
There has been an influx of people at the YWCA Shelter in Kitwe with 15 children currently residing there so resources have become stretched. We want to raise funds for the daily costs of the shelter as well as providing other much needed supplies.

The YWCA Shelter in Kitwe, Zambia acts as a transition house for young girls who have been the victims of physical and sexual abuse. The home also provides a safe space for girls and children to live while their cases come to court. Recently there has been a shortage of funds and with the sudden increase in the number of girls staying there, the YWCA needs funds to operate the shelter. The shelter also lacks resources that would create the best environment for the girls.

The $2000 raised would go towards supporting the operational costs of the shelter for 6 months (rent, food, etc.) and allow us to purchase other supplies for the shelter such as clothing, toys, books, art supplies, maize, farming tools and chickens.

Of the money raised, a minimum of  $500 will be used to purchase clothing, maize, chickens, toys, arts and crafts. Here’s is why we need them:

Clothes: Some girls arrive at the shelter with only the clothes that they are wearing, and stay for months or even years. There has been an increase in the amount of girls staying at the shelter, and only a limited amount of clothing available for them.

Maize, chickens & farming tools: We believe that purchasing chickens and growing maize will allow the shelter to generate a small income and create a food source for the girls at the shelter.

Toys, books & art supplies: The shelter creates a safe space for the girls, but we would like to go beyond their basic needs and contribute to creating a fun and beneficial environment. We would like to provide some toys, books and art supplies for the girls to be able to learn, play and have creative outlets. Involving play and art therapy activities can also assist in the girls rehabilitation and counselling sessions.

While we appreciate any money that you can give, if you would like to make a long-term contribution to the operations of the shelter please contact Mrs. Sharon Chisanga, YWCA Copperbelt Project Coordinator at sharonchisanga@yahoo.com.
