INTRODUCTION
I'm a documentary filmmaker, presently based in Singapore, an
animal rights and environment conservation activist with a very
active presence on Instagram (@dp4k.m). I have lived and worked in
Africa for over 25 years.
Like mosts activists, I am constantly trying to raise awareness
of the harrowing reality that animals, in Africa and elsewhere,
face due to human greed and ignorance.
OVERVIEW
The greatest threat facing African rhinos is poaching for the
illegal trade in their horns, which has soared in recent years.
Powdered horn is used in traditional Asian medicine as a supposed
cure for a range of illnesses – from hangovers to fevers and even
cancer even though these claims have not been scientifically proven.
The number of rhinos poached in South Africa alone has
increased by 9,000% since 2007 - from 13 to a record 1,215 in
2014.
According to statistics a rhino is poached
every eight hours in Africa!
Elephant numbers have dropped by 62% over the last decade, and they could be mostly extinct by the end of the next decade.
An estimated 100 African elephants are killed each day by poachers seeking ivory, meat and body parts, leaving only 320,000 remaining. An insatiable lust for ivory products in the Asian market makes the illegal ivory trade extremely profitable, and has led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of African elephants. Over 100,000 elephants have been killed in a three year period alone!
Between 2010 and 2014, the price of ivory in China tripled, driving illicit poaching through the roof. If the elephants are to survive, the demand for ivory must be drastically reduced. As of 2011, the world is losing more elephants than the population can reproduce, threatening the future of African elephants across the continent.
With an ever increasing human population, wildlife habitats are being lost to expanding agricultural lands which often results in human-animal interaction that sometimes results in loss of life on either or both sides.
The most poached animal is neither the elephant nor the rhino,
it is the Pangolin. These solitary, primarily nocturnal animals,
are easily recognised by their full armour of scales. Pangolins
natural habitats are found in Africa and Asia. Their scales are
made of keratin (just like rhino horns) and are targeted for their
placebo curing effects in traditional Chinese medicine.
CONSERVATION
Wildlife conservation groups have launched numerous programs
across Africa to combat these crucial issues. From campaigns to
educate local communities (on the importance of wildlife in our
ecosystems) to wildlife protection rangers patrolling the wilderness
to deter poachers looking for chances to make a quick buck by
poaching elephants and rhinos for their ivory and horns. All these
initiatives are cost intensive that are currently funded by
governments, wealthy corporations and individuals. But there is
another potential source that has remained untapped, to raise funds
for their cause, until now.
POTENTIAL SOLUTION
The global mobile/online gaming industry is valued around US$130
BILLION annually! That could prove to be a viable contributor to
help raise funds for animal welfare and protection instead of
depending solely on the traditional sources of governments, wealthy
individuals and corporations.
Over the course of the last 12+ I designed a concept for a multi-edition game that aims to educate, about endangered and abused animals, entertain and excite the players, yet at the same time, raise funds to help protect wildlife in various parts of the world.
The Pilot Edition of the 4 Stage game, sub-titled POACHER HUNTER, is focused on protecting elephants, rhinos and pangolins from poachers and saving as many of them as possible. It is estimated to cost around US$38,000 to develop and is expected to take approximately 4-5 months to produce, test and launch. It will be a cross platform game available on the iOS and Google Play stores.
To make this work, we need to hit a monthly target of US$9,500 starting from January to April 2018.
According to our business plan, once the 1st edition is
released, we intend to re-cycle the funds to produce the next 2nd
edition and so forth. A percentage of the funds accrued will be
used to help fund wildlife protection through organisations like
WWF, VETPAW and IAPF among others. Hopefully, after the 1st
Edition the game will be self sustaining.
Regular updates along with pics and videos will be posted to keep contributors abreast with the development of this project.
Subsequent planned editions promise to be riveting yet educational!
Now you too can join us to FIGHT FOR THIS WORTHY CAUSE!
TOGETHER WE CAN FIGHT FOR ANIMALS! YES WE CAN!!
