We are continuing to update our totals as money and km are coming in and more donations are made.
‘Walk For the Bu’ is a Walkathon Fundraiser event that provides KBNF with the resources needed to continue making medical miracles in West Africa.
This is our 10th annual Walk for the Bu so we are aiming big! Help us reach our goal of raising $100,000!

The Problem:
This year, more than 5 million patients will have no access to qualified neurosurgeons, resulting in otherwise avoidable disability and death.
Africa accounts for 15% of the global neurosurgical disease but has access to less than 1% of the global neurosurgeon community.
Africa has just one neurosurgeon for every 2,028,000 people. Liberia has a single neurosurgeon for the entire country of 5.1 million, while the US and Canada have one neurosurgeon for every 69,000 people.
KBNF wants to change this.
The Solution:
Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation is a charity saving lives by tackling the most complicated medical conditions in West Africa, here’s how:
- We perform neurosurgery for those with no other hope, through medical missions.
- We deliver medical equipment to hospitals and health centres on the front lines.
- We equip local neurosurgeons and health workers through training, education, and funding.
Walk for the Bu:
The 10th annual Walk for the Bu is a Walkathon Fundraiser event with a goal of raising $100,000 in support of the Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation.
Participants can join worldwide virtually to help raise funds by walking, running, hiking, or rolling between September 25 - October 2nd, 2021, or in-person on October 2nd at Bear Creek Park in Surrey B.C.
Korle-Bu is currently active in the West African countries of Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. The approximate walking distance between the capital of Liberia (Monrovia) and the capital of Nigeria (Abuja) is 2500 km. Let's see how many times we can collectively walk from Monrovia to Abuja in support of neuroscience.
There will be incredible prizes available for those that raise the most money and cover the most distance.
You can help us continue to make medical miracles in West Africa. Sign up now to walk, run, hike or roll! Don't forget to include your canine friend to Trot for the Bu. There will be prizes for them too!
Prizes you could win:
- A $400 Gift Certificate from Release the Hounds.
- A $375 Gift Certificate from Jet Pet.
Generous sponsors have offered to match up to $50,000 of every dollar donated, so every $100 you raise has $200 of impact!
The Virtual Walk: Sept 25th-October 2nd
Sign up to participate! You can sign up on your own or sign up a team. Each day, you will estimate the distance you walked during the day and report it to your team captain. Your team captain will report your team's total number here daily. Every kilometer counts. Every dollar helps. Register here and walk virtually alongside others from around the world, including those in Liberia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
- If 25 people walk 100km each we can reach 2500kms!
- If 50 people walk 50km each we can reach 2500kms!
- If 100 people walk 25km each we can reach 2500kms!
Collectively we can reach our goal of walking 2500kms and raising $100,000.
