Akoma Ntoaso Tours hasn't added a story.
Greetings and Salutations to our friends and supporters!,
My name is Sistar Kentake Malopenza, and I am the founder of the Katiopa Watoto Shule program (Canada) & the Akoma Ntoaso Tours Book Drive (Jamaica). We aim to provide Afrocentric school supplies, books, toys and educational learning materials for children of Afrikan descent in the rural communities of Scotts Pass, St. Toolies and Porus located in the parishes of Clarendon and Manchester, Jamaica.
My mother is from Scotts Pass, Manchester and i have been
travelling to the district to connect with this rural community for
over 20 years. I have established a deep and profound connection with
my maternal community in Scotts Pass and i have also had the
opportunity to establish wonderful relationships with the amazing
children in the district, many of whom i love dearly, just as if they
were my own children. Truly, i really see them as my own and i want to
always make sure they know and overstand that.
The Akoma Ntoaso Tours Book Drive seeks to uplift, empower, enlighten and educate the child population of Scotts Pass and Porus, which is also where our annual tours are based. For the last two years, we have been able to purchase a very minimal amount of school supplies and toys for a small group of children in the area. However, we would like to supply more of Our children in the region with Afrocentric resources as well.
In addition, the future plans of the Akoma Ntoaso Tours
Collective is to build and establish an Afrocentric learning
center in the district, in which our children would have internet
access, a library center where they would have access to Black books
that they could check out for a certain period of time and movies
focused on their own Afrikan-Jamaican history, arts and crafts tools
that they could use on a regular basis and Black art that would be
within the space that they would see everytime they enter the center.
We know that visual imagery is very important for Our children and in
rural Jamaica i have seen that there is not enough Black focused art
which i consider to be a problem in a country that is so melanin dominant!
We are now in the process of raising funds to:--
1) supply the children in the community with Afrocentric
school supplies, books, toys, including Black dolls (which
to my surprise and shock are very hard to find in Jamaica, because i
did look for them!) & clothing. All these items
would be for their personal use and would belong exclusively to them
alone. I believe that this initiative is very important because when
our children realize the divinity of their Blackness they will have a
thirst to learn more about their heritage and they will be anxious to
engage with one another in the dialogue of their culture and history.
Once the spark of knowledge is lit in their minds, it can never be
extinguished again.
2) purchase the library of children's books, educational family oriented dvd's focused on Black world history, 2 computers or laptops, a dvd player and television, and murals of Black art (we hope to support local Jamaican artists so that our monies remains in the Black economy of Jamaica). These items will be specifically used for the creation of the "Katiopa Watoto Shule (which means Afrikan Children's School in KiSwahili) Library Center" which we hope to build by the year 2019 in Scotts Pass, Jamaica.
All of these goods will have to be shipped to Jamaica by the end
of 2018 (December 21st the latest) and the library center will be
established in my presence when i am in the island witnessing the
center being built. The Akoma Ntoaso Tours Collective
feels that it is crucially important for Our children to learn and
overstand the TrueStory of the Pan-Afrikan resistance movement that is
a dominant part of the culture of Jamaica & the Caribbean in
general. It was on this island that the Greatest Pan-Afrikan leader
which the world has ever known was born. Therefore, Jamaican children,
more than anyone else, have the right to know who he is, his influence
on the world and what he has sacrificed for them.
Due to the lack of knowledge of the Marcus Garvey Legacy in
Jamaica, we know that many of Our children are not being taught about
the history of the Afrikan resistance movement. It should then become
Our duty & obligation to make sure that they know. We hope to help
to enlighten the rural child population about the Resilient
Legacy of the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey
and his Vision of teaching Black people to Love Ourselves and Honor
Our Ancient Ancestral Heritage.
Many Jamaicans do not know that it was the Right Honorable Baba
Marcus Mosiah Garvey that created the first black doll factory to
teach Our Black girls to love their own image. Let us also make
mention of the great contributions of his wife Amy Jacques Garvey,
Ohemma (queen) Nanny, Paul Bogle, Olive Lewin, Ohemma (queen) Bernice
Henry and Miss Lou Bennett, many of whom are not given the honor they
rightfully deserve. It cannot be stressed enough that We MUST
first know who we are in order to teach our children their TrueStory.
All those who donate to this worthy cause will be able to see photos of the Akoma Ntoaso Book Drive donations being handed out to our children in Scotts Pass, Clarendon and Porus, Manchester, on my next trip to Jamaica in August 2017. As our plans to develop the Katiopa Watoto Shule Center move forward, we would like to be able to also invite our major supporters to the island to witness the development of the library center as it is being created. Please keep updated with our Fundrazr page to find out more about our future developments in the island. The photos from our previous Book Drive(s) for 2014/2015 is located at our facebook page "Akoma Ntoaso Tours & Products" at our "Akoma Ntoaso Tours 2015" photo album. Ises,
Sistar Kentake Malopenza.
