In May, 2017, the Toronto Jazz Orchestra went into the studio to record 20 – a new CD which celebrates the band’s 20th anniversary, happening in 2018. We had a fantastic few days, and the album is nearly done: editing and mixing, along with the graphic design, are all well under way. We need your help to make sure it’s ready to go in time for our scheduled CD release party at The Rex Hotel on May 31.

The Toronto Jazz Orchestra has been producing some of the most exciting big band concerts in the city since 1998. During that time, our musicians have become some of Toronto’s busiest music professionals; our repertoire has evolved to focus primarily on original, Canadian compositions; and our performance schedule has evolved to include major productions (like the Big Band Tap Revue or the Big Band Gospel Project) and performances at festivals and concert halls throughout Ontario.

What’s so special about this new CD, you ask? 20 aims to capture the evolution and maturation of the band, and reinforce our commitment to performing Canadian big band music. But 20 is also a deeply personal project. When I started the band in 1998, I wanted to perform repertoire which inspired me as a young jazz musician, and which an audience wouldn’t hear anywhere else. And now, for the first time in nearly 20 years, I have a body of my own work – original compositions and arrangements – which I’m excited to have recorded.

The Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils have generously supported the project with recording grants – so we’re almost there! If we hit our $5,000 target, we’ll be able to cover all of the expenses associated with the CD – fees for 18 outstanding musicians and a fantastic production team, plus all of the design and manufacturing costs.

So – join the celebration by making a contribution today. Pre-order a CD, sponsor a tune or even invite us into your home for a private concert (hide the fine china) - any contribution helps.

For nearly 20 years, we’ve had the support of some very loyal people, and it would be our pleasure to add you to our list of supporters. Whether you’ve seen us before or this is your first introduction to the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, thanks for contributing to 20. We look forward to sharing with you soon this exciting new CD.Signature Josh Grossman, Artistic Director

This arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's Dear Prudence was inspired by Brad Mehldau's performance of the tune. In the jazz/rock/funk vein, the arrangement features not one but two (!) trombone solos. Sponsor this tune and we'll add your name to the liner notes ("Recording of Brad's Prudence generously supported by [your name here]") and send you a copy of the finished CD along with a handwritten note.
