SHORT VERSION
The Store Next Door will be my first children's book,
and it will introduce children to the concept of spending money in a
fun, family oriented, and slightly wacky way.
I am writing this book because I want to teach these lessons to my own children, but have not yet found suitable material! From this frustration has been born not but one, but many books on the subjects of finances, entrepreneurialism, and more. My goal is to start by publishing this book and continue publishing the rest.
To be even more helpful to children, teachers and parents alike, I
have also developed an accompanying educational aid, which turns the
material in The Store Next Door into a game for kids
to participate in. After consulting with education professionals such
as teachers and school board employees, I am confident that it will be
a successful program for classrooms because it is widely desirable by
today's math, finance, and social studies curriculum. My mission is to
improve the success of the next generations by making the essential
skills and concepts we need to survive in the modern world widely
taught through fun, common sense approaches. I believe parents and
schools will feel better equipped to handle these important but often
difficult or delicate topics for decades to come.

Writing books in general, but especially for children, has been something I have wanted to do for a very long time. I love children's stories, always have. Maybe it is because I'm just a kid at heart, maybe it was all the great books my parents read to me as a kid, or maybe it is because I share a birthday with Dr. Seuss! Today, the best part of the day for me is doing all the wackiest voices as I read for my own kids before bed.
The Store Next Door is my first children's book. It is a story for 5-7-year-old children that is about a simple everyday thing: getting the groceries for a family meal. In this story Johnny is HANGRY, and he is craving a big, scrumptious lasagna. His Dad suggests that he and his older sister Annabelle head to the store to pick up the ingredients. Together, they make up the grocery list, and Johnny's Dad hands him a $20 bill - which he warns him not to lose! From there we follow Johnny and Annabelle as they journey through The Store Next Door. Are they successful? Do they learn some things along the way? Just wait and see!
The Store Next Door is fun, it introduces the concept of money for the most common of events - picking up groceries for a family dinner - and it even sneaks in some easy money math for parent and child to work out together. Not only is my book meant to introduce children to money, but it is also to showcase three values: 1. doing things with and for your family, 2. respect for others and 3. being part of a community (which comes in the character of the store owner, Mr. Geronimo!) All this in 30 short pages. My own kids have already asked me to re-read The Store Next Door several times, and we don't even have illustrations yet!
Speaking of illustrations, that brings me to the real point of this
fund-raising campaign and what I hope to accomplish. The manuscript is
finished, so now begins the self-publishing process. There are many
paths to take when it comes to self-publishing, and after several
hours of research and phone calls, I have decided to work with a
self-publishing service that can connect me with a career illustrator,
provide distribution, and excellent service from beginning to end. I
chose this path to ensure that The Store Next Door is
high-quality, and delivered in a timely fashion, after all - our kids
are growing up quickly! We have to teach them these lessons while they
are still young! I hope to have the book completed and in print by the
end of 2018 (What a perfect stocking stuffer!)
I am confident in the self-publishing service I have chosen,
FriesenPress Publishing, which has made the process of working with
them so far very transparent and informative. After looking at some
other children's books that they have put out, and knowing that they
have what it takes to handle orders with efficiency helps me know
that The Store Next Door is in good hands. They
will provide guidance in marketing and distribution, illustration,
cover design and more.
For the next 60 days, my FundRazr campaign will be mainly for taking
pre-orders of the book (stay tuned for teasers!) and also provide
other perks to supporters who want to give above and beyond. My
funding goal will cover the publishing costs, order 1000 copies of the
book, and begin my promotional marketing. The finished product will
include e-book, paperback, and hard-copy editions.
In case you were wondering how I will be promoting my
book: To go along with The Store Next Door,
I have made an accompanying game for children to go through everything
Johnny and Annabelle do in the book. This game will be available for
free download, and I will promote it to teachers and library programs
all over, as it is perfectly aligned with the educational goals of
these organizations. I plan to visit schools, libraries, and
bookstores myself to run this program for families, exposing them to
the basics of money in a fun, collaborative way. Parents can even
download the game and play it at home! The workshop begins with
reading the book, then gives children the tools to act out the various
roles in their own shopping adventure. We end it off with a big,
imaginary cooking bonanza where many scrumptious meals are created and
devoured. In the end, they learn to be responsible for money, plan and
stick to a grocery list and complete some money math. Don't you wish
you were a part of this program when you were a kid?! It may be too
late for us, but soon your children, or nieces and nephews, or
grandbabies, or friends' kids can be!
Beyond this, my promotional strategies will include PR campaigns
and aiming to get The Store Next Door sold in stores,
and some web marketing strategies that authors are using to good
effect today to distribute their own books widely.

A BIG part of this campaign is the educational game that goes
along with the book. At this time it will only be available as a
free printable download, but it could be so much more! Support the
campaign by encouraging friends and family to contribute. If we
reach $15,000 I will develop the game into a full package with all
of the signs and props to create an even more enriching environment
for children to play in. The game will retail for under $100 for
classroom sets, and under $40 for the family version. The Store Next
Door game has beginner, intermediate and advanced levels meaning it
is customizable for various levels of math skills. It is meant for
children between Grade 1 through 4. My goal would be to include the
game as prize level before this fundraising campaign is over!
