The Koi Crew hasn't added a story.
M0XY FIRE UPDATE:
https://abc7news.com/massive-fire-burns-community-arts-space-in-oakland/5455265/
In addition to the total loss of the Koi Pond, our dear friend, Koi Crew member, and master craftsman, Aaron Cronshey's workshop burned in the fire. We will share more information as we figure out next steps for the Koi Pond (if any), but in the meantime, the best way you can support the Koi Pond is to help Aaron: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aaron-pirata-cronshey039s-get-back-to-work-fund. The loss of his business he had worked so hard to build (after being knocked down by a previous tragedy just a few years ago) is the main concern for our entire crew.
Aaron lost all of his tools and supplies that he relies on for his livelihood. His love and attention to detail is a huge part of what made the Koi Pond such a unique and beautiful project. Please consider giving what you can to help Aaron meet his deadlines, honor his contracts to clients, and continue his amazing work.
We are so lucky not to lose each other. Let's be careful, considerate and loving toward all the people in our lives and on the planet. Be kind and be well.
Love,
The Koi Crew
FOR THOSE OF YOU CATCHING UP, HERE WAS THE BIG UPDATE *PRIOR*
TO THE FIRE:
Due to some insurmountable LED
technology issues, we are unable to bring the Koi Pond out to Burning
Man this year in its originally planned form. We are, as you can
imagine, absolutely gutted about this and we extend our deepest
apologies to all of you for this disappointment.
What Happens Now?
The original Koi Pond bridge will still be installed in the center of the Temple of Direction. We’ll be creating a new, fully analog, stylized wooden pond that will serve as a place for temple visitors to leave remembrances. The original torii gate, along with a second new torii, will be installed at the entrance and exit of the temple. All of it will burn with the temple.
We’re excited about this new direction, and are determined to make the very best lemonade we can out of these lemons. We continue to be guided by the same intentions that have led us thus far: to pour our hearts into creating a peaceful, meditative and supportive space for those who are processing loss or transition at the temple this year.
What About the Fundrazr?
All funds already donated, along with any additional funds raised, will still go towards bringing the existing bridge & torii, along with the new additional torii and the new "analog" pond, out to the playa this year. We estimate that the additional wood will cost an extra ~$2000 that was not previously budgeted, and none of our original costs magically went away as a result of this pivot, so we are still gratefully accepting any and all donations towards new supplies, transport, etc.
What Happened to the Koi Pond?
In a nutshell, after moving everything into our new workspace for testing, JoeJoe discovered that the original LED panels that comprise the pond are plagued by completely unpredictable, non-isolated pixel failures that irreparably affect the aesthetics of the piece. He has tried everything to repair the dead pixels but even where that is possible, new failures randomly spring up.
We have thought through every possible way to overcome this issue, but it is simply not possible to repair or replace the panels in time for this year’s burn. For those of you who have more questions or are just curious about the technical details, you can read the full story at the end of this note.
Koi represent overcoming obstacles and perseverance, and this theme certainly resonates with us at this time. The meaning of life is in our relationship with others and it is with this in mind that our crew is working hard to create a supportive environment for everyone who has felt the loss of a loved one or is going through a significant transition. We're honored to be part of the Temple, and we are immensely grateful to our community for your support and generosity.
Sincerely,
The Koi Pond Crew
P.S. If you are making a substantial donation and would like a tax receipt, or if you have any questions about any of the perks, shipping, etc., please contact us directly at funding@burningkoi.com.
P.P.S. All donors will be invited to an exclusive pre-playa preview gathering in Oakland the weekend of August 10/11 so you can experience The Koi Pond without getting (too) dusty!
Technical Details of the LED Pond Issue for Those So Inclined
JoeJoe brought home one of the 19 large LED panels to test out a few months ago. It had one bad pixel and a flaky ribbon cable that needed to be replaced. We weren't too worried because we have about ~10 perfect spare tiles and ~30 that are similar but with a slightly different height. [Nomenclature note: JoeJoe designed the screen to be 19 panels, which are composed of 520 factory-made square tiles, which have 1024 little LED pixels each.] Bad pixels unfortunately are quite tricky to fix via normal hot air rework because of the weatherproofing topcoat (aka conformal coating).
Last week we started moving the rest of the 19 panels from storage to our workspace. The first 2 panels tested had a few tiles with a bad pixel or two, mostly at the edges of the panels, which we assumed was due to damage in handling or transport in getting the panels off the playa after Burning Man 2016 and into the warehouse, then moving them to the new location. We pushed forward thinking we still had enough spares to swap in. However the next panels we tested were even worse, with upwards of 21 dead pixels strewn across the tiles.
In the process of trying to fix up the panels, we then noticed that a number of pixels started failing after running video for a while, and they weren't limited to the edges of the panels. We went back and retested a panel that we'd completely fixed a few days prior, and found more dead pixels had surfaced. JoeJoe thinks perhaps the solder connections are failing, because gently pushing on the LED fixed the problem temporarily. The culprit could be mechanical stress (vibration or flex on the circuit boards), heat, or some corrosion by the alkali dust penetrating the conformal topcoat, but it's impossible to tell. Our worry after continuous stress testing is that the failures will likely continue and the pond will be full of dead pixels by the end of Burning Man… or possibly even by the beginning of Burning Man. Aesthetically this is a non-starter.
For reference, when the Koi Pond left Burning Man in 2016 there were ~5 bad pixels on the entire pond screen after the entire week, mostly on the edges. That was 5 dead out of over 500,000 pixels! Every single panel we fired up at our workspace had at least 5 dead pixels right off the bat, and they seemed to get worse over time. We don't have enough spare panels to remedy this situation, even if we shuffle panels with dead pixels to the edge of the pond where they'll be hidden under the deck.
After much discussion, we decided there were only two courses of action: either replace all the tiles or don't bring the Koi Pond back to Burning Man. We contacted the manufacturer and learned that they don't have any replacement tiles - they have moved on to different hole and connector patterns, and the tiles are a tiny bit bigger. So the tiles won't fit on the aluminum plates that back each of our panels.
JoeJoe and our friend Parts spent a day last weekend running the panels under stressful conditions of full brightness to see what would happen. Unfortunately this showed completely unpredictable failures over a relatively short amount of time. Due to whatever has happened to the LEDs during transport and storage we just don't feel it's capable of running 24/7 in the desert in this state.
