I have been living in Jardin for about 3 years. A year ago, I became a member of a dog and cat rescue group in Jardin, Antioquia, Colombia called Seres Amigables. The group is small for now. We started it after witnessing horrible deaths of dogs from poison deliberately planted by people overwhelmed by overpopulation of stray animals. My husband and I have rescued 5 dogs and 2 cats and everyone in the group has rescued a large number of dogs as well, but we can't possibly rescue all of them ourselves. We have many more animals that need help. Our priority has been to implement a sterilization program to reduce animal abuse and killing.
In my little village, people are just barely becoming aware that the well-being of animals is important in a community for the animals but also for public health. There is no shelter for animals, no sterilization program and no adoption programs either. The animals have become accustomed to begging and pooping in the streets, in front of people's door sometimes, they raid trash bags left outside by people and they spread fleas. All of that attracts insects, diseases and bacteria into their homes. So some people are fed-up and as a result, they have recourse to drastic measures such as poisoning when there are too many dogs in the pueblo. This is a cruel and painful death and it is not fair for those animals.
Objectives
Our objective is to create awareness and protect dogs and cats to improve the lives of animals living in the streets and the peace of the people. The idea is also to educate people on the urgency of treating animals with respect and not abandon, promote responsible pet ownership and reduce pet overpopulation through public education, legislation and support for sterilization programs. Locals do not believe in sterilization or if they do, they cannot afford it. Our group’s task is huge and costly, and we are very few to tackle it. Therefore, we need financial help to support and speed up our action.
Christina marching. Her message says: "Stray dogs do not want to cause harm to anyone. They are only looking for food and a roof. Don't abuse them."
The two photos above shows two members of our group during our first awareness march. I am on the left and my friend Soley Enriquez on the right. We made many signs like this a few days before. This one says: They do not speak. They feel . They suffer".
How we intend to do it.
We have started to implement a basic sustainable spay/neuter program to address canine and feline overpopulation. We just pick up animals in the street, we take them to our local vet for sterilization, to also vaccinate them, treat their flea infestation and intestinal parasite infection if any, wash and heal them when they are injured, and try to find families willing to adopt them. If we don’t find a family, we return the animals to their territories once they are healthy. But we bring them food where we left them and we are in the process of building dog feeding stations. Furthermore, we organize marches for awareness, raffles and other events to help our cause. Some members use their skills to gather funds such as making bandanas for dogs to sell or hosting fundraiser sales.
The Photo above shows one our Fundraiser sales. Members and friends donate their items for the cause. This time, we were in front of the Church. We have to pay for a permit.
The photo above shows the tips collected at the restaurant Consulado Vegetal, a vegan restaurant, run by Veronica and Daniel. All their tips go to the cause.
The picture above shows the sale of dog bandanas made by one of our members, Soley Enriquez. Her dogs are modeling for us. There are not street dogs. The lady with the hat is another member, Dioselina, who is congratulating the dogs for doing a good job.
Impacts
This project would have a great impact on public health and animal welfare as there would be less dogs roaming, so it would reduce the volume of trash being raided by dogs and the dog waste which is considered an environmental pollutant. It would reduce the negative effect on people's health and well-being and improve their relationship with dogs. Vaccinate dogs reduce the risk of getting rabies also. In this part of the country, there are issues of poverty, illiteracy, sanitation and animal welfare comes last.
Where would the money go
The money will go to neutering and spaying, designing a system to not sterilize an animal twice, shots, care, eventual surgeries for those injured, food for the animals, designing a proper adoption and fostering program with follow-up, and a program to educate the locals on the importance of responsible pet's ownership. The group also needs to buy 3 crates minimum, one for cats and 2 bigger one of different sizes to carry injured dogs (car accident, dog fight, disease or else). We are also in the process of building dog feeder stations. There is much more to do, but this is the priority. Later, we intend to build a basic prefabricated shelter where to welcome some animals while they recuperate from an injury or a surgery in a safe place as it is very difficult to find people willing and able to do that.

Merci.
