Michelle Reid hasn't added a story.
Hello My name is Michelle and I am writing on behalf of my co-worker and dear friend Sue whose community is being uprooted due to an illegal renoviction. Having grown up on the Drive, I can fully understand these tenants ties to East Van, Commercial Drive and the area that surrounds it. The place they live is so much more than a place to rest their heads at night, it represents a loving community of residents that have lived in these apartments for over 238 years collectively. The Grandview-Woodland apartments are one of the last few affordable apartment complexes in a time where many are forced to move away from their communities due to Vancouver's steep rent increases and zero occupancy rates. Many of the residents, some on pensions, will not have the means to stay within the city. As we shrug and say, "That's Vancouver for you" - let's take a minute to pause - what if this was your community? What would you do?
I admire the residents as they are not willing to sit down and accept this. It is the classic David & Goliath situation. A new landlord - that has instructed his middle man- to "get these assholes out" all in a bid to "upgrade" the current apartments in exchange for new tenants that will be paying two or three times as much. There is no opportunity for the current residents to stay and as they fight multiple eviction notices the landlord is doing everything in their power to make living there less pleasant. Also, by delaying his development permit the landlord gets to avoid compensating the tenants. Who fights for them? The Rental Tenancy Board? Nope. With so many loopholes for Goliath to weave through, it seems the odds are stacked in the landlords favour. The result - 17 people (3 of which are children), 12 cats, 3 dogs, 1 chinchilla and 2 degus - will all ring in the New Year without their home. That's right - to add insult to injury their last eviction notice is for December 31st.
How can we help? The residents are fighting their eviction and have a hearing with the Rental Tenancy Board. As the other side has money to spare and a binder full to support their case, our tenants need help to build theirs. All funds raised are going towards fighting their case which includes hiring an electrician and plumber to refute the landlords claims that the work needed to upgrade the building can not be done while the tenants are living there.
All it takes is for one case to go in the tenant's favour to start to build the momentum, to change the rules and to help save our communities. Thank you for listening and your support - Let's save East Van together....
